When university comms trades scientific nuance for splashy clicks, everyone loses. Here is how to celebrate the real work without setting the hype trap.

A research team spends three hard years in the lab and finally gets a paper accepted. The communications team spots it and gets excited. Within forty-eight hours, the headline is live:

In the rush to grab attention, secure clicks, and boost university rankings, all the careful details get tossed aside. The caveats disappear. The tiny test size gets ignored. The story gets polished until it sounds like a finished miracle.
We do this because of an old, bad habit. Comms teams often assume that regular readers—and even corporate funders—cannot stomach complexity, and that nobody will care unless we pretend the problem is completely solved.
It doesn’t work. In fact, it often backfires.
When we sell early lab experiments as finished products, we set an invisible trap. The moment the next test runs into normal engineering friction, or another university publishes different results, the whole story falls apart. The public feels misled. Industry partners look at the headline, spot the hype, and wonder why a supposedly "market-ready" technology has suddenly gone quiet.
Real credibility (and the funding that comes with it) does not come from pretending you have all the answers. It comes from being proud of the exact step you just solved.
The Battery That Proved the Rule, Not the Product

You don’t need to write boring disclaimers to be accurate. You just need to respect both the science and the audience.
Celebrate the clue, not just the gadget. Fundamental science does not need to apologise for not being a finished consumer product on day one. If a team figured out why a material breaks down, or found a new way to track a molecule, tell that story. Trying to turn every chemistry paper into a retail product cheapens the work.
State your limits with pride. Explaining what your test did—and what it didn’t do—is not a sign of weakness. It is proof of good, honest work. Telling readers where the current test stops shows funders and peers that your team is careful, realistic, and reliable.
Talk to each other before hitting publish. Too often, communicators want splashy headlines, while researchers hide behind thick jargon because they are afraid of being misquoted. When both sides sit down and write the story together, you get work that is easy to understand without cutting corners on the truth.
Great research institutions do not need to shout, and they do not need to dress up normal science as magic. In a world full of empty hype, real authority belongs to the people confident enough to tell the honest story.
